San Francisco holds the distinction of being the only consolidated city-county in the state of California. San Francisco is the second most densely populated major city in the United States, after New York City. It is the cultural, financial and commercial center of Northern California. San Francisco has also been a leading center for Liberal Activism in the US.

The city is famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, possibly the most photographed bridge in the world. Tourists are also drawn to Lombard Street, a famous avenue with eight hairpin turns; Alcatraz, a former federal prison; and the numerous beautiful beaches forming part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The major sports teams in the city include the San Francisco Giants baseball team and the San Francisco 49’ers of the NFL.
