Calaveras County is located in the California’s Gold Country. The county takes its name from the Calaveras River, which is Spanish for skulls. It was said to have been named by Spanish explorer Captain Gabriel Moraga, due to the many skulls of Native Americans that he found along the banks of the stream. Calaverite, an uncommon gold telluride mineral discovered in the county in 1861, was named for the county.
